Trump’s coronavirus blunder and failed leadership

Posted by:

In failing to react quickly to the coronavirus, Donald Trump’s blunder rivals that of General Maurice Gamelin, commander of the French Army at the start of World War Two.

Shortly before Germany invaded France, Gamelin received intelligence reports the Germans were headed toward the Ardennes forest. Convinced the Ardennes could not be penetrated, Gamelin disregarded what he was told. The Germans burst through the Ardennes and took Paris five weeks later.

Like Gamelin, Trump didn’t see facts that were right in front of him. The difference is, in denying the virus was a threat, Trump was blinded by his own self-image. To acknowledge the coronavirus threat meant necessarily to acknowledge the economy—Trump’s alter-ego—might tank, and he is incapable of seeing anything that might reflect badly on him.

Trump can’t lead because to lead means to serve others, and he has no sense of others. His deficit is more deeply rooted than politics. It’s based on his instinct to look out for himself only, and this means denying anything that might make him look bad. Trump will put the American people at risk to save his self-image.

If you want to lead, you have to ask questions and listen. Gamelin demonstrated how denying the existence of a threat puts people at risk, as Trump did for over a month.

Trump scoffed at the threat of the coronavirus. “We have it totally under control,” he said on January 22. “It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” He continued to deny the severity of the threat in February. And now we’re at battle stations—and on the defensive.

If you want to lead, you have to take care of your people. Military officers are taught to take care of their troops—ensure they’re well trained, fed, housed, getting paid on time, etc.

Trump doesn’t care about people, a point he illustrated on March 6 when said he didn’t want a cruise ship to dock in San Francisco because of how it would reflect on him. “I like the numbers being where they are,” said Trump. “I don’t need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn’t our fault.”

If you want to lead, you inspire, especially in times of darkness. Look to Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller, a Marine Corps general, to see how it’s done. Surrounded and outnumbered by Chinese forces at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War, Puller told his men something to the effect of, “The enemy has us right where we want them. We can shoot in every direction.” (There are lots of variations about what he said.)

The best Trump can do is stumble through a canned speech—as inspiring as nails being dragged on a chalk board.

If you want to lead, you show concern for your people and you don’t ask them to do anything you wouldn’t do. Puller was known to setup his command posts close to the front lines. He wanted to be in the thick of the fight and for his men to know he was with them. What matters, says General Colin Powell, is the personal example you set.

The best Trump can do is talk about the stock market coming back one day.

If you want to lead, you acknowledge what people are feeling. After former president George H.W. Bush died, his speechwriter, Jennifer Grossman, spoke about “his innate sense of empathy.” Self-absorbed, Trump is incapable of relating to others’ fear.

If you’re inclined to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, ask yourself the two questions military service members would ask when assessing leadership. Would you be willing to go into combat with him? Would you trust him with your life?

It’s probably a good thing Trump dodged the Vietnam War with medical deferments. There’s no telling how much harm he could have created for his own troops in combat.

PLEASE Stop purveying this crap. Trying to heap this problem on one single man is BS and you know it. I too am not a fan of Trump. But there are plenty of instances of dems – governors, mayors and members of congress — who also downplayed this.

For goodness sake why don’t you try to be a positive messenger? There will be plenty of time to finger point at the appropriate time, but now is not the time for this. Put it this way. When you were navigator, do you think your pilot wanted to hear you chirp about your opinions of the navigation system (the system suck, this system is slow, I hate this system, bah blah) in your plane? Or did/he she want you to deal with it at the time as best you could, keep a positive approach, get safely on the deck and then turn in a squawk later? I bet I know the answer. FOR GOD’S SAKE STOP THE ENDLESS NEGATIVITY. SAVE IT FOR LATER.

Let’s all join together, think positive and let is shake out. In other words, turn off CNN/FOX, go for a walk with your dog, wave to your neighbors, hug your spouse. Make the best of it for now. Sort out the blame later.

Great analogy Jack and your transition to President Trump is seamless. In addition , you have captured the character and leadership flaws that are always excused by his inelastic base.

You sir are an attorney and not used to applying logic to situations. During noir dire in the Delaware County of Common Pleas, the Defense Attorney posed a question I will forever remember. He asked jurors what were they here to do? Find the truth or follow the Law? Logically the answer should be find the truth, as the truth will set you free.I hope you believe in the Scientific Method, that Statistics are part of Mathematics and Logic does exist. Trump is being advised by Medical Experts that served the previous 4 Presidents who advised that Sars-V 2 (as the rest of the World calls this coronavirus) will be like the normal Flu. However, less than 30 days before the Chinese and WHO said this was no big deal. If you are a believer in Logic, Scientific Method, and Mathematics tell me how 3 of the largest most densely populated cities in the world, in close proximity to Wuhan (Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong) with daily maybe hourly train, bus, and airplane service were not affected? Countries in Europe and the USA have been decimated. Tell me the Science, Statistics, and Logic that applies here? This logically is a controlled outbreak of a biological nature. A prophylactic most likely exists. I believe the Intelligence will show that the President’s hand are tied as we can only play defense right now. I was privileged to attended CBRN School as an Army Officer and know we would never attack in kind. Apply what logic you have and tell us how we should proceed, knowing that 3 of the largest pandemics since Korean War started in the wet market in Wuhan?

Jack, I assume you wrote this before the Captain of the Theodore Roosevelt was sacked late last week. As a former navy aviator, you know better than most if that was as absurd as it seems?
Thanks for your continuing, provocative writing.

Good comments and analogies. Greatly enjoyed this article. Thank God that Trump was not our president during WWII. Heaven wisely sent us Winston Churchill and FDR. Hopefully the natural empathy of Joe Biden will be allowed to lead us soon so that we can try to regain the good in this country that Trump has destroyed. If fortunate to win, he can re-assemble the Obama economic team to try and save the country once again. Yet another Democratic bail out.

Biden couldn’t win my church raffle if he bought all of the tickets. Unfortunately for the Dems, they had a pathetic lot to choose from and sleepy Joe will not stand the test of time. There were better candidates, but the party couldn’t get behind one horse as their preferred winner. Between now and then I do hope Joe lets us in one the secret….where’s Hunter?

The reality is Trump acted preemptively and effectively to keep coronavirus carriers out of the U.S by enforcing the travel ban with China, and it was Joe Biden and people of his ilk opposing the travel ban and eager to stoke fear, accusing Trump of “fearmongering” and “xenophobia”. Unfortunately for Trump’s critics, World Health Organization experts admit Trump’s quick actions have saved lives in the U.S. The early travel bans are praised by our nations leading health experts. Dr. Ronny Jackson, who served as White House Physician from 2013-2018, also credits Trump for his decisive response to the coronavirus epidemic. “The president has done everything he needed to do in this case,” he explains. “He’s acted quickly and decisively. He did what he always has done…he went with his instincts.”

With their undisguised hatred for Trump, the main stream media loves to hype bad news and deny Trump credit for lower corona-related fatalities then the models are predicting. Trump and his administration began aggressively addressing the coronvirus situation immediately after China reported coronavirus to the WHO by fast-tracking the use of testing kits, setting up the Corona Task Force, and implementing the travel ban with China, all several weeks before WHO declared coronavirus a pandemic. However, Joe Biden called Trump’s travel ban with China an overreaction, and accused him of trying to scare the public, saying “This is no time for Trump’s record of hysteria and xenophobia and fear-mongering to lead the way instead of science.”

The mainstream media are dishonest schlub’s and Obama and Biden are a bunch of phonies devoted to public relations victories, not to serving others. Trump cares about Americans and is a real man who is actively protecting the U.S. when it comes to coronavirus or anything else, including the protection of our country from the openly hostile, and proudly socialist anti-American Left. These people would love nothing more than to impeach Trump and throw him out, lying to Americans about Trump-Russia collusion, Ukraine, Avenatti, Stormy Daniels, Michael Cohen, FBI lying about FISA Applications (Comey, McCabe, Strzok Smirk), Adam Schiff dreaming up bogus stories…the list goes on. Impeachment hopes fade, so the Left aggressively politicizes the coronavirus outbreak.

The Left is desperate for false narratives to throw out Trump and it shows.

Today, on a neutral website, was a story about the need for the US to develop strategies to meet the challenge of a worldwide virus outbreak. This was delivered in 2005 (and I am guessing before Hurricane Katrina). Dubya had read a book on the Flu pandemic of 1918 and was concerned the US & our allies would need to prepare for just this type of fast-moving virus. I was very surprised & I wasn’t aware of his efforts. One fair Kudo to Dubya.
For perspective about ownership of a crisis like the COVID-19, please youtube a video of a statesman. Look under Bay of Pigs debacle and President Kennedy. A spoiler alert: At a press conference around mid-April,1961 he declared he was responsible as the chief executive officer of the US for the disaster. And the mess was a CIA mission.

Thank you, Jack, for the essay and especially the analogy to the French general.

Jack, Jack, Jack……although I do look forward to your occasional blog/posting this one offered so very little…except for the story of “General Maurice Gamelin, commander of the French Army at the start of World War Two”. I just finished reading Three Days At The Brink by Bret Baier so I appreciated the timely added story.

As for your blog….I know you can do better than this. While NOBODY came close to understanding the multi-dimensional complexity of this Covid-19….to have an all out assault on any President is just wrong. I have a few FB “friends” who have an unquenchable, vehement HATRED of President Trump that negatively fogs EVERY aspect of the President (and most of his Cabinet/Administration). They spew their hatred at every opportunity…without exception.
I find this conduct unfortunate, unpatriotic, unfair and a frankly a sign of ignorance. There is so much energy behind their hatred I actually question HOW someone can be so evil in their feelings towards any human being. I’ve been taught “we’re all God’s children”.
Jack, lets not join the few FB “friends” that I referenced above and tear into EVERY aspect of our President’s handling of this unprecedented Covid-19 challenge that we all face. Based on the latest news reports….perhaps you might want to direct your next Blog on the apparent failures of the WHO?
