Do you think at all about where to find God in your life? I do, and I struggle to find him, but some politicians make it look easy. A select number claim to know what God wants, based on what must be a direct line to the Heavens which the rest of us will likely never enjoy. Two examples were given to us within the last few weeks.
The first is from Ohio Representatives Ron Hood, R-Ashville, and Tom Brinkman, R-Cincinnati, who introduced HB 17, which would allow for the concealed carrying of guns without a permit. According to Hood, putting on a coat to conceal a handgun should not strip Ohioans of “their God-given rights as recognized in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.”
How is it that Hood knows what God wants when it comes to guns? I marvel at Hood’s ability to divine what God has to say about guns because I’ve read the Second Amendment several times, and the word “God” is nowhere to be found in it. Certainly, Hood must be closer to God than I’ll ever be.
Next comes the statement from former Congresswoman Michele Bachman, R-Minnesota, who refers to President Trump as “highly biblical.” In her view, “we will in all likelihood never see a more godly, biblical president again in our lifetimes.” Who knew?!
Just think—here’s a man who many regard as a misogynist, adulterer, liar, racist, narcissist, an arrogant man of low emotional intelligence—conservative columnist George Will called him a “sad, embarrassing wreck of a man”—but Bachman finds Trump to be a godly. This means one of two things: either I’m destined, by comparison, for an express ride to heaven (unlikely), or Bachman and I are not praying to the same God.
