Is Cal Thomas right about a double standard?

Don’t look now, but hell just froze over. I find myself agreeing with columnist Cal Thomas. I can’t remember his columns ever resonating with me, but there’s a first time for everything. Mind you, I don’t see eye-to-eye with Thomas just because he’s conservative. I think highly of David Brooks, who is conservative, but Brooks is always insightful. Thomas, on the other hand, always seems to be negative and more opinionated than analytical. (Apologies, Mr. Thomas.)

So, what’s the point of agreement? It’s with Thomas’ op-ed where he compares society’s reaction to Michael Sams, the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL, and Tim Tebow, who was proud to witness his faith on the field. “Double standard allowed Tebow to be attacked for his faith.” It seems that at least one NFL player was disciplined for making inappropriate comments about Sams’ sexuality, but Tebow was opened derided for his faith, and that didn’t seem to generate any backlash. Mind you, Tebow wasn’t using the Bible to justify political goals, a practice I find to be troubling. He was just being mindful of his faith.

Is there, as Thomas claims, a double standard, where LGBT issues are off-limits, but Christianity is fair game for hecklers? Some might say the difference is that Tebow was a little too pretentious about his faith. Okay, maybe he was, but is that justification for mean-spirited comments? (If you say yes, I think you’ve got problems.)

What am I missing here?
